John 15:4-5 says (AMP):
4Dwell in Me, and I will dwell in you. [Live in Me, and I will live in you.] Just as no branch can bear fruit of itself without abiding in (being vitally united to) the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you abide in Me.
5I am the Vine; you are the branches. Whoever lives in Me and I in him bears much (abundant) fruit. However, apart from Me [cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing.
Imagine a glass full of water. The water is in the glass. Can the glass be in the water whilst at the same time the water is in the glass? That’s the puzzle i found myself trying to figure out after i read the words of Jesus in John 15:4, ‘Dwell in Me and i will dwell in you’. In other words, if we dwell in Christ, he dwells in us. But you may ask, how is that even possible that we dwell in Christ and at the same time he dwells in us?
1 John 2:24 also says: 24As for you, keep in your hearts what you have heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the first dwells and remains in you, then you will dwell in the Son and in the Father [always].
This verse says if we dwell in Christ we dwell in the Father. This is because the Son dwells in the Father and the Father in the Son so if we dwell in the Son we Dwell in the Father; and hence from John 15:4 the Son and the Father dwell in us.
Finally, Colossians 2:9-10 says (AMP):
9For in Him the whole fullness of Deity (the Godhead) continues to dwell in bodily form [giving complete expression of the divine nature].
10And you are in Him, made full and having come to fullness of life [in Christ you too are filled with the Godhead–Father, Son and Holy Spirit–and reach full spiritual stature]. And He is the Head of all rule and authority [of every angelic principality and power].
Because the whole fullness of Deity(Godhead) dwells in Christ, if we are in Christ we also are filled with the entire Godhead(Father, Son and Holy Spirit). So once again, when we dwell in Christ, God dwells in us. But how is this even possible. Using the illustration i gave before, how can water be in a glass and the glass be in water at the same time.
The only way this is possible is if the glass and water become one. When 2 things become one they become totally knitted into each other and they stay in one another.
If we were to put this in modern day theological terms which i’m always reluctant to use we might call this the ‘the incarnation of man’. Just as Jesus was fully human and fully God, we become filled with the Godhead. Our lives are hidden with Christ in God, and Christ equally dwells in us.
However, apart from Christ, we can do nothing. And in Him, we can do everything.
Galatians 3:26-27: 26For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God through faith.
27For as many [of you] as were baptized into Christ [into a spiritual union and communion with Christ, the Anointed One, the Messiah] have put on (clothed yourselves with) Christ.
Through Faith, you become a son of God. We become baptized into a spiritual union with Christ and we put on Christ. If we put on Christ we put on the Godhead. Wherever we go he goes, and wherever we stay he stays. And wherever Christ goes, we go. Wherever He stays we stay. If it weren’t so Paul would never say we were seated with Christ in the heavenlies even though we were physically present in the world. It can never ever be overemphasised the power we have through being in Christ. It is something worth studying for a lifetime.
